6 Ohio schools rank higher than UC, Xavier on best colleges in America list by Money mag

A couple local schools improved their ratings on Money magazine’s best colleges in America list.

The digital finance publication grants ratings ranging from 1-5 stars to over 700 universities. No colleges in Ohio scored 5 stars, but the University of Cincinnati and Xavier University improved their ratings compared to 2024, when they both received 3-star ratings. This year, UC and Xavier received 3.5 stars.

Additionally, in 2024, three Ohio colleges had 2.5-star ratings, but no schools ranked that low this year.

Money magazine whittled down the over 2,400 four-year public and private nonprofit colleges in the country to the 732 schools used in the study, using various criteria such as having at least 500 undergraduate students or 150 freshmen. Graduation rates, student-to-faculty ratios, net price of a degree, earnings 10 years after college entry and average student debt after graduation were just some of the metrics used.

A 5-star rating signifies the school scored “exceptionally high” on most of the magazine’s metrics, while 2- or 3-star ratings mean the school tends to “have some combination of lower graduation rates, higher prices or mediocre alumni salaries,” the report stated.

Here’s how Ohio’s major schools were rated in the report, published June 25.
