PORT CLINTON – A police foot chase of someone suspected to have a gun led to charges against three people and delayed the release of children at Bataan Memorial Primary School on Aug. 22.
Two suspects, Trevon Floyd, 18, and Elijah Ramsey, 18, were arrested and incarcerated at the Ottawa County Detention Facility for multiple felony charges.
The police report noted that the foot chase ended when Floyd climbed a television antenna to the roof of a residence and officers demanded that he drop his backpack and anything else he was carrying.
“(Floyd) mocked officers for several minutes and asked us several times if we wanted to see his gun. Officers held (Floyd) at gunpoint as he made these threats and accusations from the rooftop,” the police report noted.
Floyd eventually dumped the contents of the backpack and jumped to another rooftop, then gave up and climbed down the antenna to be taken into custody.
Floyd was charged with a fifth-degree felony of obstructing official business, a first-degree misdemeanor for inducing panic, and a fourth-degree misdemeanor for criminal trespass. Ramsey was charged with one fifth-degree felony count of obstructing justice.
Both were held at the Ottawa County Detention Facility without bond.
A Port Clinton police officer had attempted to make a traffic stop around 1:30 p.m. of a blue Ford F-150 pickup truck believed to be related to an ongoing vehicle theft investigation with the Fremont Police Department.
Floyd, a passenger, fled on foot and a foot chase ensued. Floyd was chased by Port Clinton police officers, deputies of the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office and officers with the Catawba Island Police Department.
The chase continued through several Port Clinton neighborhoods. Police eventually used a drone and a K-9 for tracking and officers were warned by a relative that Floyd was carrying a firearm.
School dismissal was delayed when the suspect entered the area of the Bataan School and police suspected he had a firearm.
No firearm was found.
“No. No firearm. We didn’t find one, anyhow,” Port Clinton Police Chief David Scott said. “It was said that he might have one, but we did a track with our K-9 and an article search, but one was never found. When we talked to the gentleman after he was arrested, he didn’t say he had one. He also admitted to a lot of other stuff, so I don’t think he had one involved.”
A third person was also arrested for obstructing official business, a second-degree misdemeanor, and was released without incarceration. The person was a relative of Floyd’s and told police he may have had a gun.
The report noted that more items will be added pending officer’s force reports and a grand jury session. The incident remains under investigation.
