An 11-year-old girl died at a hospital days after a family member shot her in what Columbus police are calling an accident.
Amya Frazier died at Nationwide Children’s Hospital on Dec. 8, the Franklin County Coroner’s Office said in a statement the day following her death.

The shooting happened Dec. 5 at a residence in the 200 block of South Wheatland Avenue. Officers responded at 6:26 p.m. to a report of gunshots, according to a Columbus police news release.
Paramedics took Frazier to the hospital in “life-threatening” condition, where she was pronounced dead three days later.
The Columbus police Homicide Unit, which handled the case because of the severity of Amya’s injuries, said their preliminary investigation indicated an accidental shooting had happened between family members, according to the news release. Police have not announced any charges in the shooting, nor have they explained how investigators determined the shooting was an accident.
Anyone with information about the shooting can contact the Columbus police Homicide Unit at 614-645-4730 or provide an anonymous tip to Central Ohio Crime Stoppers at 614-461-8477.
