“Your Friends & Neighbors,” the Apple+ TV show about a fired hedge fund manager who resorts to stealing from his neighbors’ homes, is filming Season Three — and that means possibly seeing your favorite restaurant or coffee shop shut down temporarily.
Such was the case June 23 at Sunshine Coffee Roasters when the production shot scenes at the Rye cafe.
The series has filmed there before as it has other locations in Rye, namely Aurora, (60 Purchase St.) and Ruby’s Oyster Bar & Bistro (45 Purchase St.). Eagle-eyed viewers might have also spotted Bluemercury (61 Purchase St.) and the exterior store fronts of June & Ho (70 Purchase St.) and Water Moon (66 Purchase St.).
The drama, which stars Jon Hamm, Amanda Peet and Olivia Munn, has also filmed multiple times at The Brazen Fox in White Plains — they were there in May — as well as at the Westchester County Airport.
Other prior locations include Woodlea in Briarcliff Manor, a Gilded Age mansion that’s now the Sleepy Hollow Country Club and The Belvedere Estate in Tarrytown as well as various homes and streetscapes in Harrison, West Harrison, Purchase, Briarcliff Manor, New Rochelle, White Plains and Manhattan. Particular attention has been given to Harrison where the residence of Coop’s ex-wife Mel (played by Peet), a classic craftsman-style house, is used. Also in the spotlight: the Purchase home of Sam Levitt, Coop’s ex-lover and Mel’s good friend.
Westchester fits the bill for ‘Your Friends & Neighbors’
Award-winning location professional Shane Haden, a longtime veteran whose credits include “Bull” (on CBS) and projects such as “The Night Of” and “Ripley,” told Westchester County Tourism & Film, that the area fits the bill perfectly thanks both to its diverse backdrops and studio infrastructure at Great Point Studios in Yonkers. It helps, too, he said, that there are restaurants and bars, elegant residential interiors and exteriors, village streetscapes, an airport, and private club settings all within a relatively short distance.
Haden, who lives in Westchester (as do many of the cast and crew), said they intentionally selected recurring locations in municipalities where strong partnerships could be built. Specifically he cited the Town of Harrison, including West Harrison, Purchase, and areas surrounding Westchester Country Club. Each, he told Westchester Tourism & Film, have been instrumental to the show’s success, thanks to filming guidelines, police assistance, and an understanding of the creative process. He also cited positive experiences in White Plains, Mount Pleasant, and Rye.
“Many of Westchester’s towns are film-friendly and are set up to make filming in their communities pretty straightforward for productions,” he said. ”There’s an appreciation and interest in filming from both commercial and residential community members.”
The Westchester connection — the series is set in Westmont Village, a fictional town in the county — becomes even more fitting when you consider its roots. The show was created by author Jonathan Tropper (“See,” “Warrior,” “Banshee”), who once lived in New Rochelle and taught at Manhattanville University in Purchase.
