A Yorktown High School graduate, Gorman was a member of the girls’ varsity bowling team, the town’s Facebook post said.

“She was a ray of sunshine,” the post said, “and this darkness cannot diminish her light.”

News reports from Chicago said Gorman was walking with a few friends Thursday when what was described as a masked gunman approached and shot in their direction.

The university said a vigil was to have been held Thursday night.

“It is with profound sadness that I write to share that one of our students, Sheridan Gorman, was killed earlier today in an incident north of the Lake Shore Campus,” university President Mark C. Reed said on Instagram. “This is a tragic loss, and our hearts go out to Sheridan’s family, loved ones, and all who knew her.”Reed said the university’s campus safety is working alongside Chicago police as the investigation proceeds.
