Over a foot of snow blanketed much of the New York City-metropolitan area Monday morning as the Mid-Atlantic contended with a heavy snow storm Sunday, Jan. 25, into Monday.
Between 9 and 17 inches fell throughout the region, with the lowest totals counted in Orange County and Bergen County, New Jersey, and the highest in Rockland, Westchester and Putnam. A bit of freezing rain came later in the evening Sunday as temperatures remained in the 10s, causing icy conditions on top of the thick sheets of snow.
Winter Storm Fern brought back memories of the last major blizzard the New York-metro area saw in 2016, generating theories of a 10-year weather event. In 2016, Central Park measured over 24 inches of snow from January 22 to January 24.
“The first big storm I can remember, the biggest storm of all time for me was I think Blizzard of ’96,” said Skyler Mosenthal, 39, of Tarrytown. “I’m not sure if this is the same on par but this is pretty good. We have operation driveway cleanout over here. The snow, we tried to do one round last night but it piled up a little bit so we have our work cut out for us today.”

Blizzard baby delivered by paramedics in Mount Kisco
Even a blizzard baby was delivered by Westchester EMS paramedics in Mount Kisco Sunday morning, according to an Instagram post.
“It was pretty amazing. I had literally just come on at 7 a.m. this morning. We went to the call and there was the mom, ready to deliver,” said Westchester paramedic Mark Schivley in an interview with ABC 7. “You know, they’re not going out in the snowstorm, so we went to them.”
Are there any power outages in Lower Hudson Valley Monday?
Power outages remained at a minimum throughout the area, with less than 10 in the entire region as of 10 a.m. Monday morning.

LaGuardia Airport (LGA)
The airport was closed for part of Sunday but reopened Sunday evening. There are no additional announcements or further weather delays for LaGuardia as of Monday morning.
Most flights scheduled to arrive or depart out of LaGuardia airport before noon were canceled or delayed Monday. For more, go to LaGuardia’s X account.
John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK)
According to JFK’s Twitter/X account, the airport experienced an AirTran service disruption Sunday evening. It is unclear whether the AirTran service is restored.
Nearly all flights scheduled to depart before noon on Monday are delayed or cancelled, according to the airport’s website. Check with airlines for specific arrival/departure delays.
Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR)
AirTrain EWR service at Newark Airport was temporarily suspended early Monday. Shuttle buses are available at terminals & stations. For more, go to Newark’s X account.
Many arriving and departing flights were delayed or canceled Monday morning, according to the airport’s website. Check your airline for specific flight info/delays.
Westchester County Airport (HPN)
There are no weather updates or alerts on Westchester airport’s website.
Most departures prior to noon on Monday are canceled, and about half of the scheduled arriving flights were canceled before 2 p.m. Check specific flight arrival/departure info on the Westchester airport website.
How are road conditions Monday morning in Lower Hudson Valley?
According to the New York State Department of Transportation 511 traffic alerts, all major roads are open as of 8:15 a.m.
Snow plows have been seen clearing the last of Sunday’s snowfall in Rockland and Westchester counties since 6 a.m. According to the National Weather Service, there’s a 40% chance of a few more flurries, but by 10 a.m., skies should be clear.
Westchester Bee-Line Buses, Metro-North Railroad delayed
There will be a delayed start for Westchester’s Bee-Line Bus system and ParaTransit services Monday, Jan. 26. Bee-Line buses will resume at 10 a.m., County Executive Ken Jenkins’ office said Sunday night. Expect possible detours and check service updates before traveling.
Paratransit service will also begin at 10 a.m. The county encouraged customers to contact the reservation office to confirm their scheduled ride.
“Westchester County continues to monitor conditions and will provide updates as needed,” a county new release said.
Metro-North Railroad service has been reduced to a Saturday schedule Monday. The Hudson Rail Link and Haverstraw-Ossining Ferry are also running on special schedules. Check the Metro North website or TrainTime app for specific information on train schedules and delays.

Westchester offices closed
Westchester County offices will be closed Monday and all non-essential employees will work remotely, county news release said. County offices will resume a regular schedule on Tuesday.
Westchester, Rockland, Putnam schools closed
All school districts in Rockland, Westchester and Putnam are closed Monday, and will resume for a full day Tuesday, January 27.
Some Social Security offices closed for in-person appointments
