Whipping winds are expected through much of western New York through Tuesday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service in Buffalo.
The Weather Service issued a wind advisory through 2 p.m. in Wyoming, Livingston, Ontario, Cattaraugus, Allegany and southern Erie counties. Wind gusts up to 50 mph and sustained winds between 20 and 30 mph are expected.
An advisory in Chautauqua County, along Lake Erie also lasts until 2 p.m. but wind winds are expected to be stronger – up to 55 mph – as are sustained winds – between 25 and 35 mph. The downslope part of the Chautauqua Ridge to the Lake Erie shoreline is particularly vulnerable, forecasters said.
In the Finger Lakes, Yates and Steuben counties are expected to see gusts up to 50 mph and sustained winds between 15 and 25 mph. In Seneca and Schuyler counties, gusts could reach up to 45 mph and sustained winds between 10 and 20 mph. Both advisories end mid-afternoon, according to the Weather Service.
The strongest winds are predicted to hit before 11 a.m., forecasters said.
The high winds could cause unsecured objects to blow around. Tree limbs could topple and the strong wind could potentially cause some power outages.
