Why are people protesting in Binghamton on Oct. 18? What to know about 'No Kings' rally

Binghamton and Owego will be two sites of many protests planned across the country on Oct. 18 in a second round of “No Kings” rallies.

The rally is one of more than 2,500 planned as part of the national movement dubbed “No Kings Day of Peaceful Action” by event organizers who said the movement is “uniting people across this country to fight dictatorship together.”

“The president thinks his rule is absolute,” the organization said in a statement. “But in America, we don’t have kings and we won’t back down against chaos, corruption, and cruelty.”

Here’s what to know.

Why are people protesting on Oct. 18?

The rally, first created by the No Kings organization, is being held to “oppose tyranny and stand up to the Trump administration,” according to a press release.

Previously, a No Kings rally held in Binghamton on June 14 coincided with a large-scale military parade President Donald Trump had planned in Washington, D.C. The nationwide event drew more than 5 million people, according to No Kings organizers.

This time, organizers are encouraging people to follow the lead of protests in Portland, where protesters “dressed as animals have been peacefully protesting the city’s occupation by the National Guard and ICE,” according to the release.

What is planned in Binghamton and Owego?

The rally in Binghamton will begin at 2 p.m. on Oct. 18 in front of the Broome County Courthouse, located at 92 Court St.

Local organizations including Indivisible Binghamton, 50501 Binghamton, Citizen Action of NY, Democratic Women of Broome County, Town of Union Democrats and the Democratic Committee of Broome County will be hosting the event.

In Owego, the rally is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. on Oct. 18 outside the Tioga County Historic Courthouse at 20 Court St.
