Why are New York landmarks glowing blue tonight?

Landmarks across New York will glow blue Wednesday night, May 6, to honor fallen police officers remembered during the state’s annual memorial ceremony.

Gov. Kathy Hochul directed state landmarks to be illuminated as part of Police Memorial Day recognition, following a ceremony earlier this week at the Empire State Plaza in Albany.

Honoring fallen officers

During the ceremony, officials honored 56 officers from eight departments whose names were added to the New York State Police Officers Memorial.

The memorial now includes 1,964 officers from 157 agencies statewide, along with six federal law enforcement agencies.

Many of the newly added names include officers who died in the line of duty or from illnesses linked to their service, including those tied to the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

Which landmarks will be lit

Several high-profile sites across the state are expected to be illuminated blue, including:

Additional sites include bridges, state buildings and transit hubs across New York.

What the blue lights represent

The blue lighting is meant to recognize the service and sacrifice of police officers statewide and to honor those who lost their lives in the line of duty.

Officials say the tribute also serves as a reminder of the impact on families, colleagues and communities across New York.
