New York offers deals to Canadian travelers after visits drop 26%

Gov. Kathy Hochul is inviting Canadian travelers to visit New York with a new promotion offering deals on attractions, lodging and other experiences across the state.

The NY LOVES CANADA promotion, available through the I LOVE NY website, highlights discounts and travel opportunities available during the final weeks of summer and into the fall. Some promotions will continue through December.

The offers vary by attraction and lodging provider, with several discounts intended to encourage Canadian travel and help offset the effects of the currency exchange rate.

Canadian visitation to New York fell more than 26% in 2025, according to the state.

“Canada is a strategic and vital ally to New York, and the state’s tourism businesses are feeling the impact of fewer visitors traveling to our communities,” Hochul said in a statement.

Canadian travel to New York declined in 2025

Canada has long been New York’s largest international market for inbound travelers.

Overall visitation to New York grew 1.1% to 321 million visitors in 2025, according to the state. However, international travel fell 6%, driven in part by significant declines in visitors from Canada.

Spending by Canadian travelers fell 28% compared with 2024, the state said. Full statewide and regional tourism reports for 2025 are available online.

The NY LOVES CANADA promotion is the latest effort by I LOVE NY to encourage cross-border tourism, particularly in communities and regions along the Canadian border.

Discounts available across New York

The promotion highlights travel opportunities throughout the state, from Niagara Falls and the Thousand Islands to the Adirondacks and New York City.

The campaign also complements the Northern Neighbour Deal from New York City Tourism + Conventions, which features offers on hotels, attractions, restaurants and Broadway shows.

“New York State is always eager to welcome its friends from north of the border, and these special discounts provide additional reasons for Canadian travelers to extend their summer and kick off fall holidays,” Ross D. Levi, Empire State Development’s vice president and executive director of tourism, said in a statement.

Businesses and attractions interested in participating in the NY LOVES CANADA promotion are encouraged to contact their regional Tourism Promotion Agency.

New York has also used targeted marketing, digital and social media outreach and trade missions to Montreal and Toronto to strengthen its relationship with Canadian travelers and businesses.
