Many Lower Hudson Valley residents vacation in Florida for sunshine and beaches. They also appear to like a popular grocery store chain there, too.
Last week, we asked our readers to vote for a grocery store chain they’d want to see open in the Lower Hudson Valley, and there was a clear winner.
Read on for the results of our latest poll to find out which chain locals want to see come to the area.
Lohud readers vote for Florida chain as one they’d like to see come to NY
Voters in the latest Journal News/lohud.com grocery stores poll picked Publix as the store they would most want to come to the Lower Hudson Valley.
The poll, which closed Friday, April 24, at midnight, asked readers to choose from pretty much anything: More stores from grocery chains that already have a Lower Hudson Valley presence; stores from elsewhere in the country or the world; and stand-alone grocers. We included in the list some chains from other parts of the United States, such as Kroger, Meijer, Publix, Shaw’s, and H-E-B.
Publix, which, according to its website, has some 890 Florida locations and hundreds more across other southeastern states, received nearly 33% of the vote, with 32 votes. (Nearly 100 total votes were tallied in the poll.)
This reporter threw in a few he’s been to in Europe: Eroski, Gadis, Mercadona, and Carrefour. None have U.S. stores.
We also gave an “other” category, where voters could write in their own selection.
What other grocery stores do New Yorkers want to see?
Here’s a look at the rest of the results. Note that one voter, in a write-in vote in the “other” category, suggested two stores: “Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods in Mount Kisco.”
Trader Joe’s, which has stores including in Hartsdale, Larchmont, Scarsdale, Yorktown (and one coming to Yonkers), received seven votes.
Shaw’s, which has stores in Rhode Island, Massachusetts and northern New England, got seven votes.
Kroger, with stores largely in the Midwest and South, garnered six votes, as did Texas-based H-E-B, and Fareway.
Wegmans, which has a Westchester location in West Harrison, got five votes.
Whole Foods, which has stores in Chappaqua, Port Chester and White Plains, notched three votes.
Aldi, which has locations in Rockland County’s Nanuet and Stony Point, received two votes.
Uncle Giuseppe’s, which has a Yorktown location in Westchester and stores on Long Island and in New Jersey, received two votes.
Stew Leonard’s, which has one Westchester location in Yonkers and stores in Connecticut, on Long Island and in New Jersey, received one vote.
Keep one thing in mind. In some instances, people voted for stores that were listed as examples; in others, such as for Trader Joe’s, Wegman’s, Stew Leonard’s and others, people wrote them in under “other.” The second-highest vote getter was “other,” which encompassed the various write-ins. Many who voted that way expressed a desire for more stores from chains that already have a Lower Hudson Valley presence.
At least a couple of the voters specified where they want the stores: One mentioned Mount Kisco; another wrote “Trader Joe’s in Rockland County.”
Other stores that received a write-in under the “other” category are:
Three chains from Europe that were provided as examples in the poll’s list each received two votes: French-based Carrefour, Spain’s Mercadona and the United Kingdom’s Tesco.
Eroski, a chain in Spain, received one vote.
Meijer, a Midwest chain, Hy-Vee, and Gelson’s (an upscale chain in southern California) were also in the poll list of possibilities and each received one vote.
