When is daylight savings time ending in 2025?

Within weeks, most U.S. residents will set their clocks back an hour and say goodbye to the sun earlier in the evening.

Even though federal legislation aimed at ending daylight savings time was introduced twice in recent years, neither effort succeeded (so far — one bill, introduced earlier this year, remains in committee.)

So we’re stuck with daylight savings time, which ends in November and starts up again in March. Here’s what to know.

When is daylight savings time?

Daylight Savings time ends this year at 2 a.m. on Sunday, November 2.

It’ll start up again on Sunday, March 8, 2026, when clocks “spring forward” an hour, and you’ll lose an hour of sleep.

Why do we have daylight savings time?

Daylight saving time became a national standard in 1966 when President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Uniform Time Act, which was established as a way to continue to conserve energy. The thinking was if it’s light out longer, that’s less time you’ll need to use the lights in your house.

In 2005, Congress amended the act to expand daylight saving time to the period in effect today. This move was also for energy saving purposes.
