In less than a month, students across the Rochester region will return to school for the 2026-27 academic year.
Because Labor Day falls on Monday, Sept. 7, this year’s first day of school dates span more than a week, with some districts starting before the holiday and others returning later in the week.
First day of school spans more than a week
Of the 38 public school districts in Monroe, Ontario and Wayne counties listed below, several will welcome students before Labor Day. Most of those districts will begin the school year Wednesday, Sept. 2, then pause for the holiday weekend before classes resume the following week.
Those districts include Brockport, Fairport, Penfield, Webster and Wayne Central.
The most common first day of school is Tuesday, Sept. 8, when the majority of districts will welcome students back after the Labor Day weekend.
Other districts will begin even later. Hilton, Spencerport, Phelps-Clifton Springs and Sodus will start Wednesday, Sept. 9. Canandaigua students in grades 1-12 will have their first day Thursday, Sept. 10, while kindergarten and universal pre-K students start Friday, Sept. 11.
While some families are soaking up the final weeks of summer, others are preparing for a new school year that begins earlier than normal in some Rochester-area districts.
