The easiest thing to discuss with rookie quarterbacks is what can go wrong. New York Jets fans have a degree in said studies, but other fan bases aren’t immune. The NFL is filled with examples of highly-touted prospects who struggled to adjust to the speed, complexity, and pressure of the professional game.
That’s why so many projections tend to focus on risk. A recent CBS Sports projection involving Jets rookie Cade Klubnik did exactly that, but it also took a different approach.
The model outlined some concerning possibilities. More interesting was the picture it painted of what success could look like if everything fell into place. According to CBS Sports, Klubnik’s best-case rookie season would include a 63.7 percent completion rate, 3,650 passing yards, 19 touchdown passes, 11 interceptions, and a passer rating of 87.4.
They are not discussing MVP numbers here. It would be unfair to expect a fourth-round draft choice to walk on the field in year one and transform this franchise overnight. Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott is the exception to the rule, not the standard.
CBS Sports’ theory also includes a respectable seven yards per attempt and a manageable 39 sacks taken. That type of season that would leave Jets fans feeling optimistic about the future. Most importantly, it would suggest steady growth rather than survival.
Part of the optimism stems from the situation surrounding Klubnik. He didn’t enter the league carrying the burden of franchise savior. The plan for him has always centered around development. To help that process, New York surrounded him with additional talent. The Jets added weapons such as rookies Kenyon Sadiq and Omar Cooper Jr.
Offensive coordinator Frank Reich will also have his say in how the young gunslinger develops. Throughout his coaching career, he has built offenses designed to simplify reads, utilize play-action concepts, and create favorable situations for quarterbacks.
If Klubnik reaches the upper end of his projection, those factors will likely play a significant role. Of course, the same projection that highlighted Klubnik’s upside also revealed lingering concerns. Questions about consistency and overall production at the NCAA level followed him into the draft process and remain part of the evaluation today.
Overall, the numbers suggest a pathway to success exists. They also suggest Klubnik has more to prove than many of his peers. For the Jets, that’s perfectly fine. They aren’t asking him to become a superstar overnight. They’re asking him to develop. In time, they may discover they have found much more than a developmental quarterback.
