What Hudson Valley shoppers should know about Target baby wipes recall

Target is voluntarily recalling certain kinds of Up & Up baby wipes due to potential microbial contamination and customer complaints about product discoloration, a June 5 notice on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration website said.

FDA testing identified, in product samples, Burkholderia cepacia complex and Burkholderia gladioi, bacteria that may potentially result in serious and life-threatening infections, the notice said.

Target and the wipes’ maker, Sapro Temizlik Urunleri, have received consumer complaints and adverse event reports “alleging product discoloration and symptoms such as skin irritation, eye irritation, and infections potentially associated with using the product,” the notice said. The reports remain under investigation.

Target is voluntarily recalling certain lots of the Up & Up Fragrance Free and Up & Up Fresh Cucumber Scented Baby Wipes.

Newborns, infants, and young children are “particularly vulnerable to opportunistic infection due to their immature immune systems,” the notice said.

Where are Target stores in the Lower Hudson Valley?

Target has several Westchester and Rockland stores, including Mount Kisco, Spring Valley, Mount Vernon, West Nyack, White Plains, and Yonkers .

People should stop using the recalled items and return them to any Target store for full refund, the notice said. Consumers can call Target guest relations at 1-800-440-0680 for information.

What could happen if you use the recalled baby wipes?

In healthy people, using the wipes on skin with minor lesions will more likely result in local infections, the notice said. In immunocompromised people, newborns, infants and young children, the infection is more likely to spread into the bloodstream, “potentially leading to life-threatening sepsis or pneumonia.”

The recalled wipes were made by a supplier and sold at Target stores nationwide and at target.com, the notice said.
