Have you seen a house with a purple porch light? While that color choice may simply reflect a person’s personal taste, there could be a deeper meaning.
Across the nation, a purple porch light is meant raise awareness for domestic violence and offers support for survivors or those looking to escape a dangerous domestic situation.
Why have I seen more purple porch lights recently?
Even though purple porch light can be visible anytime, you’re more likely to see them in October which is Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
Gov. Kathy Hochul recognized October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month in New York on Oct. 6. Hochul issued a proclamation and directed state landmarks to be illuminated in purple tonight in honor of those impacted by domestic violence.
Purple is the recognized color of domestic violence as it represents courage, peace, survival and dedication ending violence.
How can I show support?
In addition to installing purple porch lights, other ways to show support or raise awareness can be to educate yourself about domestic violence and have conversations about it in your community.
You can also participate or organize an awareness campaign. People are also encouraged to use social media hashtags such as #DVAM2025 or #WithSurvivors to show support.
If you’re experiencing abuse or know someone that is, the National Domestic Violence Hotline is available 24/7 at 1-800-799-SAFE or visit https://www.thehotline.org/.
