Wegmans Food Markets is recalling Locatelli Grated Pecorino Romano Cheese with Wegmans’ scale labels because of the potential presence of listeria monocytogenes.
The affected product was packaged in plastic tubs with UPC code 2-77580-(weight) and sold between Nov. 14 and 24 at Wegmans stores in Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, Massachusetts, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Washington, D.C.
The recall was issued Nov. 26.
Listeria monocytogenes is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people and people with weakened immune systems.
Healthy people who are infected may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, but listeria can cause miscarriages and stillbirths in pregnant women.
No illnesses have been reported to date.
Customers who still have the affected the product should return it to stores for refunds.
