Members of the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to the area for an unresponsive man in an area off the shoulder of the road. At the scene, deputies located the body of 59-year-old Jeffery Maxson, of the Village of Sherburne.

The investigation revealed that Maxson was walking westbound on State Highway 80 at about 8:40 p.m. on July 4 when he was struck by a vehicle traveling eastbound.

The sheriff’s office said the driver of the vehicle did not stop and continued east on State Highway 80, leaving Maxson on the side of the road.

On July 7, deputies were able to locate and seize a black Ram 1500 pickup truck that was allegedly seen on security cameras near the crash site.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information can contact the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office at 607-334-2000.
