A New York State Police sergeant was killed in a motorcycle crash in the Hudson Valley on Tuesday, Sept. 16, troopers announced.
Nigel K. Barnett, 49, of Poughkeepsie, was operating a motorcycle south on the Taconic State Parkway in East Fishkill, Dutchess County, when he lost control of the motorcycle around 6:30 a.m., according to State Police.
He was thrown from the motorcycle and struck the guardrail on highway’s western shoulder.
Barnett – who was traveling to work at the time of the crash – died at the scene, troopers said.
Who was Nigel Barnett?
Barnett was a 19-year veteran of the New York State Police and most recently served as the station commander for the Cortlandt station, located in Westchester County, troopers said.
State Police said that Barnett served “with dedication and distinction throughout his career. His commitment to public safety, his leadership and his steady presence will be deeply missed by the members of our Division and the communities he served.”
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to Sergeant Barnett’s family, friends and colleagues during this difficult time,” State Police shared in a social media post. “Please keep them in your thoughts as we honor his service and sacrifice.”
