US women's hockey team sets Olympic record, advances to gold medal game

Monday’s Olympic semifinal matchup against Sweden was more of the same for Team USA. The U.S. women’s hockey team shut out the Swedes, 5-0, to advance to another gold medal game.

The U.S. has not allowed a goal since the second period of its tournament opener against Czechia. The win was Team USA’s fifth consecutive shutout, and the 331 minutes without allowing a goal is the longest stretch in Olympic history.

Haley Winn, a defenseman from the Rochester area, has points in four straight games. She picked up a secondary assist on Abbey Murphy’s goal late in the second period that put Team USA ahead 3-0.

Among the other highlights: Hayley Scamurra, a Buffalo-area native, had one of Team USA’s goals.

Here’s how Team USA’s former Bishop Kearney student-athletes fared:

Team USA will face the winner of Canada-Switzerland for the gold medal on Thursday.
