A pair of homicides on the same day in Mount Vernon included a fatal stabbing in a rooming house and a shooting near the Bronx border.
An arrest was made in the Stevens Avenue stabbing Friday, Nov. 21, the city announced in a Saturday night news release, and the shooting at Eastchester and Mundy lanes remains under investigation.
Astillo Sylvain, 32, was charged with first-degree manslaughter after police responded to a report of a menacing at the rooming house on Stevens Avenue just after 8:30 a.m. Friday found a 68-year-old resident with a stab wound. The victim, who has not been publicly identified, was taken to Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx where he died from his injuries.
Sylvain, who also lived at the rooming house, was arraigned Friday in City Court and ordered held without bail at the Westchester County jail. He is due back in court on Wednesday.
The city has provided very few details about the Friday night homicide. A news release early Saturday said only that one person had been killed and that detectives were canvassing a large crime scene area that included Eastchester Lane, South 9th Avenue and South 11th Avenue.
A city spokesman would only add Saturday night that the homicide involved a shooting and remained under investigation and would not provide the age and gender of the victim or the time when the killing occurred.
Anyone with information regarding that shooting is asked to contact Mount Vernon police detectives at 914-665-2510. Anonymous tips can also be sent by texting “MVPD” and the tip to 847411 or by using the “Mount Vernon PD” app, available in the Google Play and Apple Store.
