Thrower Charlie Sullivan leads Westchester/Putnam outdoor track stars

Injuries took out some of the area’s top senior track and field stars this spring. But that didn’t stop other athletes from the area from accumulating medals at the state championships and All-American honors.

Leading the list of the latter is this year’s Westchester/Putnam Boys Outdoor Track and Field Athlete of the Year, Somers’ Charlie Sullivan.

Below find a recap of Sullivan’s season and a listing of all the other Westchester/Putnam boys outdoor track all-stars.

Charlie Sullivan

Westchester/Putnam Boys Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year

School: Somers

Year: Senior

Highlights: The University of Wisconsin is known for its throwing program and it’s getting a thrower who, at this point, appears to have no ceiling. Sullivan, who not only trained with his Somers squad but also added another three days a week for the last several years at NY Hammer Throw Academy in Ulster County, was this year’s Gatorade New York Boys Track and Field Player of the Year. That award was based on both his indoor winter season in which Sullivan was the state public and Federation (all schools) weight throw champion and also medaled in weight throw at Nike Indoor Nationals before a springtime of domination in the hammer throw. Sullivan not only finished second among high school boys in hammer at Nike Outdoor Nationals but was also second in the U20 men’s competition. If all goes well, he’ll compete at the U20 World Championships later this summer. Sullivan, the no-surprise Westchester County champion, threw 238 feet, three inches on home turf at the Joe Wynne Somers Lions Club Invitational. That was not only third best for a high school thrower in the country this year, but also No. 5 among high schoolers all-time in New York. No. 1 is Olympian Rudy Winkler, at only about 16-and-a-half feet farther. Ff Sullivan’s final throw at the Lions meet had been just inches to the right, he might be only about six feet behind Winkler. But this was only chapter one with a lot more pages remaining.
