A Penfield teen landed the biggest catch early at the Riedman Foundation 2026 Trout Derby, reeling in a trout measuring almost 24 inches and weighing 8.5 pounds.
Jonathan Christopher, 14, caught the standout fish by 9 a.m., topping early catches that mostly included smaller 4- to 6-inch trout — along with the occasional tree branch or stray fishing line.

The annual derby at Powder Mills Park in Perinton began a few weeks later than usual due to flooding from heavy rains, but turnout and enthusiasm remained strong.
The event, held for more than 20 years, started at 7 a.m. and ran through noon, with prizes awarded across multiple age groups.
