Steuben County Department of Public Works crews are currently engaged in extensive repairs of local roads, and all travelers should expect traffic delays and exercise extreme caution on county roads until further notice, the county announced June 11.
Eric Rose, Steuben County Public Works Commissioner, said following the severe storm that struck Steuben County on June 9, the DPW is continuing to actively respond to widespread damage across the county’s highway system.
“Our teams are working around the clock to restore safe travel conditions,” Rose said. “We’re asking for the public’s patience as we complete these essential repairs and ensure roads are passable once again.”
Some of the most heavily impacted areas are County Routes 87 and 16, where flooding caused significant damage to roadway surfaces and drainage systems, Rose said. Additional damage assessments are ongoing throughout the county.
Motorists are reminded:
Thunderstorms produced heavy rain across the region Monday, with the National Weather Service reporting that between 2-3 inches fell on some areas. Emergency management stated that numerous roads were flooded and washed out from West Cameron to Bath.
A State of Emergency was declared for the towns of Canisteo, Cameron, Bath, Urbana, Pulteney and Wayne due to excessive rainfall and multiple road closures.
The Bath Volunteer Fire Department reported that it ran a total of 23 weather related calls and four non-weather related calls Monday night as most roads along county routes 10, 13, 14, 15 and 16 and state routes 54 and 415 were being washed out.
Bath also said it responded to a motor vehicle accident on I-86 for a car sinking into standing water. When units arrived on scene, they found a blue SUV submerged in the median after hitting a spot on the highway where water was flowing over the roadway, causing the vehicle to hydroplane. No injuries were reported.
