Savannah Guthrie back on ‘Today’ as search for her missing mom continues

Savannah Guthrie returned to her desk in New York City this week, rejoining NBC’s “Today” show after a months-long absence.

The journalist came back Monday, April 6, following a hiatus after the disappearance of her 84-year-old mother, Nancy Guthrie.

Wearing a bright yellow dress, Guthrie opened the show for the first time in more than two months.

“We are so glad you started your week with us,” she said. “And it is good to be home.”

“It is good to have you back at home,” co-anchor Craig Melvin replied.

Supporters gathered outside 30 Rockefeller Plaza, holding “Welcome back, Savannah” signs and wearing yellow ribbon stickers in honor of her mother. Guthrie later joined colleagues on the plaza, thanking those who came out to support her.

Has Savannah Guthrie’s mom been found?

No. Nancy Guthrie has not been found.

She was reported missing from her Arizona home on Feb. 1. Authorities believe she may have been taken against her will.

The FBI released images in February showing a masked person at her front door before she disappeared, but the individual has not been identified.

Guthrie stepped away from “Today” and NBC’s Olympics coverage as the search began. During her absence, the show continued to cover the case and express support.

Why did Savannah Guthrie return?

In a March interview with Hoda Kotb, Guthrie explained her decision to return:

“It’s hard to imagine doing it, because it’s such a place of joy and lightness,” she said. “I can’t come back and try to be something that I’m not. But I can’t not come back, because it’s my family.”

“I want to smile. And when I do, it will be real. My joy will be my protest. My joy will be my answer.”

Guthrie and her family continue to ask the public for help.

In a March 21 statement, they called for renewed attention to the case.

“Someone knows something,” the family said. “It’s possible a member of this community has information they do not even realize is significant.”
