SPRING VALLEY ― New York State Department of Transportation announced a bit of a reprieve for a massive construction project that will shut down a busy stretch of Route 59 in this densely populated village.
The project is now due to start June 3, according to NYSDOT spokesperson Heather Pillsworth.
The project was first to commence May 21, then was pushed back to May 26, which would keep the corridor open through the Memorial Day holiday.
The work was due to wrap up by Labor Day, which is Sept. 7 this year. Pillsworth said the end-date target remains the same.
What’s the point of the project?
The work will reconstruct a bridge that carries Route 59 over South Pascack Road.
The bridge needs to be brought up to modern design standards, according to the state Department of Transportation.
The stretch of road is in the village of Spring Valley, in a section that falls within the towns of Clarkstown and Ramapo.
Traffic impacts on 59 and S. Pascack Road
The closure will cut off vehicle and pedestrian access of a 0.1-mile stretch from the intersection with New Clarkstown Road to around the Shell station to the west on Route 59.
DOT has reported that businesses would be open during construction.
South Pascack Road below will experience traffic stops during construction periods, according to the DOT, with a flagger directing alternating traffic.
Detour ahead for drivers and walkers
The detour, just under a mile long, sends westbound vehicles on 59:
Pedestrians would have to follow the same path but can pick up a complimentary taxi to take them around the construction from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily.
