Rival scout impressed with New York Giants' defense

Despite a challenging 2025 season in which the New York Giants ranked near the bottom of the league in defensive scoring and total defense, a rival scout believes the unit is poised for improvement heading into 2026. The departure of star nose tackle Dexter Lawrence created a significant void, but the team has made targeted additions to bolster the front.

“Signing heavyweight nose tackle D.J. Reader and veteran Shelby Harris helps make up for the trade of Dexter Lawrence,” the scout told Athlon Sports.

The pass rush remains a strength, led by Brian Burns, who recorded a team-high 16.5 sacks last season.

“Brian Burns’ pass-rushing skills are practically unparalleled,” the scout said. “Arvell Reese has size, strength and growth in front of him as a pass-rusher working in his favor. … The Giants need Abdul Carter to keep getting better.”

The addition of veteran linebacker Tremaine Edmunds further strengthens the linebacker corps.

“Signing Tremaine Edmunds gives the Giants an imposing inside linebacker who can run,” the scout said.

In the secondary, which struggled at times last year, the scout offered a measured endorsement.

“The secondary is in the solid category,” the scout added.

With John Harbaugh leading the program and these reinforcements in place, the Giants’ defense could exceed expectations this season.
