It was a major week for the Penfield girls soccer team. The Patriots, seeded seventh in the Class AA section tournament, knocked off second-seeded Greece Athena in Saturday’s quarterfinals.
Their reward: An appearance in the New York state rankings.
Penfield (10-4-1) debuted at No. 23 in the Class AA rankings, after opening sectional play with a pair of wins. Their latest was an upset over the prolific Trojans, secured on Hannah D’Imperio’s goal with 11 minutes remaining in the contest for a 2-1 victory.
That game sets up a semifinal meeting against third-seeded Churchville-Chili. The teams played once earlier this season, when Penfield earned a 1-0 win in mid-September.
