One person died in a fiery crash in Mendon Ponds Park Wednesday morning, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.
The crash occurred on Hopkins Point Road within the county park around 10:40 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 1, deputies said. A vehicle left the road and struck a tree. Emergency responders arrived at the scene – near the border of Mendon and Pittsford – to find the vehicle engulfed in flames, said sheriff’s spokesman Deputy David Marcucci.
Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze and found the driver inside the charred vehicle. The driver died at the scene. Deputies did not release the driver’s name.
“We ask that you keep the family and friends of the deceased in your thoughts,” Marcucci said.
Hopkins Point Road was closed for several hours on Wednesday. Deputies are investigating the crash.
Mendon Ponds Park is Monroe County’s largest park at 2,500 acres and spans Pittsford and Mendon. The site of the crash was just northwest of Hundred Acre Pond within the park, close to the border of the two towns.
