Smoke from Canada’s ongoing wildfires is once again drifting into New York, reducing air quality across much of the state.

Air quality advisory issued for much of New York

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has issued an Air Quality Health Advisory from midnight Wednesday through midnight Thursday for much of western, central and parts of eastern New York as smoke is expected to push fine-particle pollution to unhealthy levels.

Why wildfire smoke is a health concern

Fine-particle pollution, known as PM2.5, consists of microscopic particles that can penetrate deep into the lungs and even enter the bloodstream. Exposure can worsen asthma, heart disease and other respiratory conditions, particularly among children, older adults and people with underlying health issues.
