NY is giving out free air conditioners. How to apply, who is eligible

Staying cool as temperatures begin to rise is important, especially for people with health problems and those sensitive to extreme heat.

New York is preparing to see the hottest temperatures yet this year June 21-25. Older people and people dealing with chronic health issues can be vulnerable during extreme heat situations.

New York’s Essential Plan Cooling program will be providing free air conditioners for New Yorkers enrolled in its State Essential Plan. Air conditioners will be given out on a first-come, first-served basis while the funds are available or until Aug. 31.

Residents enrolled in the Essential Plan who have persistent asthma and have not received a cooling unit in the past five years through the state’s Home Energy Assistance Program can apply for a unit at their permanent address on file with the state health department.

If the vendor determines that an air conditioner cannot be installed, a fan will be provided. Installation for a window or portable air conditioner cannot exceed $900. For applicants who need to replace an already existing wall sleeve unit, the installation cannot exceed $1,100.

The Essential Plan Cooling Program is part of the Extreme Heat Action Plan that was established statewide in 2022.

“The Essential Plan Cooling Program is a life-saving resource that will help New Yorkers with chronic health conditions like asthma be able to affordably stay safe and healthy against extreme heat,” New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said in a June 19 email statement.
