Could the New York Giants turn to rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart earlier than expected? Is it possible he wins the starting role over veteran Russell Wilson out of training camp?
The answer to both of those questions is “no.”
Despite an outside push by media analysts and fans to create a quarterback controversy in East Rutherford, there isn’t one, and head coach Brian Daboll made that abundantly clear on Wednesday.
Before the Giants took the field for their first training camp practice of 2025, Daboll shut down any notion of a QB controversy, emphatically reiterating that Wilson will be their Week 1 starter.
“These guys will be out here competing, but Russ is our starter,” Daboll said matter-of-factly.
Asked about potentially redshirting Dart, general manager Joe Schoen explained the benefits of sitting for a year and learning. However, he did leave the door open for things to change later in the season.
“Going through the process, we have Mike Kafka on the staff as our offensive coordinator. He was in Kansas City with Patrick Mahomes, (who) I think played one game at the end of (his rookie) year,” Schoen said. “Our plan in Buffalo was for Josh (Allen) to probably not play much his first year.
“I think there are some real benefits from sitting and learning, specifically from some of the guys in the room who have the experience they have. But if the coaching staff at some point feels it’s right and he’s ready, I’ll leave that up to them.”
Some may be inclined to argue that this is a smokescreen by the Giants, but similar to the Daniel Jones situation, Schoen and Daboll are being very transparent. They would prefer Dart develop this season without seeing much field time.
