New York Giants' Ar'Darius Washington arrives with chip on his shoulder

When it comes to having success in the NFL, the odds have always been against defensive back Ar’Darius Washington.

He was signed by the Baltimore Ravens as an undrafted free agent out of TCU back in 2021 and spent his first three seasons flipping back and forth from injured reserve (IR), the practice squad, and, occasionally, the active roster. He played in just eight games over that span.

But in 2024, Washington would stay healthy, play in 16 games, start nine, and appear to be on his way. That ended quickly last May when Washington tore his Achilles tendon and missed the first 13 games of the regular season.

This past week, Washington, like several other former Baltimore Ravens, followed John Harbaugh up to New York. He was inked to a one-year, $3 million prove-it deal, and he intends to do just that. He’s been here before.

Washington has always been doubted. His size (5-foot-8, 180 pounds) is less than ideal for an NFL safety, and his 40-yard time (4.61) was less than desirable at his college pro day. He is determined to beat the odds and make this Giants’ roster.

“That chip has always been on my shoulder. I ain’t just become 5’8. I’ve kind of been small my whole life,” Washington told John Schmeelk. “I don’t think about it. Everybody is big to me. Every time I go out there, I just try to have that chip on my shoulder.”

Harbaugh and his defensive coordinator, Dennard Wilson, know Washington’s story. They know what he can do and what to expect. That cuts both ways. Washington is hoping they remember him, too.

Washington likely won’t win a starting role. High-priced free-agent Jevon Holland and former second-round pick Tyler Nubin speak for the safety spots, and Dru Phillips is the Giants’ main slot corner.

“I just want to be wherever the ball is,” said Washington.

He usually is.
