Editor’s note: Carter has since deleted his posts about the report being inaccurate.
New York Giants 2025 first-round pick Abdul Carter was benched during the first drive in Sunday’s 27-20 loss to the Green Bay Packers for disciplinary reasons that were not disclosed.
On Monday, however, The Athletic’s Giants beat reporter, Dan Duggan, reported that Carter was disciplined for missing a walkthrough because he was sleeping in the facility.
Carter, who accepted responsibility for the benching without clarifying what he did, quickly responded to the report, calling it a misunderstanding.
Carter followed that up with an additional post.
Either way, head coach Mike Kafka confirmed after Sunday’s game that the benching was for disciplinary reasons.
“Yeah, we’ll keep the rest of that in-house,” Kafka said when asked if the rookie linebacker was held out for disciplinary reasons. “Just it was a coach’s decision for me and talked to Abdul.”
Carter missed the first drive but played on every other drive in the game. He played 49 of the 55 defensive snaps in the game, making one stop and recording a QB hit.
“Yeah. He played his butt off,” Kafka said when probed if he was trying to set an example of Carter. “He practiced his tail off, played his butt off. I’m really happy about Abdul and excited to watch him continue to grow and continue to play a lot more as a pro.
“I love Abdul and what he brings to this team, the skill set he has. This guy loves ball. I’m excited again to watch him attack this week of practice and continue to work and grow and be the great player that I think he is.”
Carter kept at the media for criticizing him.
Whatever the case may be, this is an issue fostered under Daboll and one that won’t be tolerated by Kafka.
