Market madness has taken over the Lower Hudson Valley. Within the span of a few months, eight new grocery stores have opened — or are coming soon — to the area. That’s on top of German discounter Lidl, which opened its second Westchester store in Yonkers last October (it’s also opening in Tappan).
From a focus on organic wares designed to resemble a farmers’ market, to a family run operation with an emphasis on Latin products, the below offer an array of choices, some of which are highly curated. A roundup follows.
Olive Tree Middle Eastern Market & Cafe, Pleasantville
Step into a world of authentic Middle Eastern flavors at this new market, open since June 20. The warm space, with a few tables inside, is all about bringing a little piece of home into your life, with halal products, olive oils, traditional sweets, aromatic spices, and specialty items. They also serve Turkish coffee along with other drinks such as a Spanish latte, white mocha, caramel macchiato and smoothies. 4 Pleasantville Ave., 914-552-0860.
Peekskill Supermarket, Peekskill
Warehouse-style bulk pricing along with meats, produce, bakery items, and a wide variety of Latin and international products are the focus at Peekskill Supermarket, which opened July 1. There’s also a hot food buffet with indoor seating. The massive spot is all about bargains and as well as convenience. EBT cards are accepted and you can recycle your bottles and cans in their recycling machines.
The family behind the new venture has long operated supermarkets throughout Rockland County, including Garden Fresh Market, Huerto del Edén, Spring Valley Supermarket in Spring Valley and Nyack Fresh Market in Nyack. They also own D&K Produce, a produce distribution company which ensures lower prices and quality control as their fruits and vegetables come directly from the source. Hartsdale Marketplace, Hartsdale
What had been Rite-Aid has been transformed into Hartsdale Marketplace, a Key Food grocery destination set to open sometime around Aug. 19. Shoppers can expect a carefully curated assortment of everyday essentials as well as produce, pantry items and specialty ingredients designed to reflect the tastes and traditions of the community. 196 E Hartsdale Ave.
Sprouts Farmers Market, Inc., Hartsdale
Sprouts, a nationwide supermarket chain known for its wide selection of natural and organic foods, is opening its first Westchester store in Hartsdale in early September. The company, which was named Progressive Grocer’s Retailer of the Year in 2024, blends a farmers market experience with an open layout featuring fresh produce at the center of the store. It also prides itself on its innovative, seasonal and attribute-driven products such as organic, plant-based, gluten-free, dairy-free, keto, and more. The grocer, one of the largest and fastest growing specialty retailers of fresh, natural and organic food in the U.S., operates more than 480 stores in 25 states nationwide. 393 N. Old World Market, Orangeburg
Look for a later this summer debut of this gourmet supermarket, which is opening its second location where Orange Farm Market had been. Owner Andrew Poma said the store, which has been in business in Nyack for 16 years, will be approximately half the size, but will have all the same specialty sections (i.e. produce, bakery, cheese, deli, meat, fish and prepared foods). 1A Orangetown Shopping Center, oldworldfoodmarket.com.
Piccolino, Scarsdale
This smaller DeCicco & Sons grocery store, on target to open later this year in downtown Scarsdale, is built around the idea that today’s consumers want healthy, high-quality, exceptional-tasting food without having to spend hours researching every product. It’s why the team at DeCicco’s had done it for you. Their thoughtfully curated wares will range from prepared foods and pantry staples to fresh produce, premium meats, and the signature tonic bar. The DeCicco & Sons family is also opening its first Connecticut store late August/early September in Greenwich. Trader Joe’s, Yonkers
A new Trader Joe’s — the county’s fifth — will open in Yonkers, though there’s no specific date (yet) for the store. As Regional Vice President Sunshine Haven told The Journal News/lohud in May, “Yonkers is a vibrant community, and it’s been clear to us for a long time that this city deserves a Trader Joe’s.”
Other Westchester Trader Joe’s locations include Larchmont, Hartsdale, Yorktown Heights and Scarsdale (on the Eastchester border). 2482 Central Park Ave., traderjoes.com.
Lidl, Tappan
Sometime this summer is word on the street for the opening of this Lidl, the first one in Rockland. The German-based supermarket chain, which was founded in 1973 and now runs more than 12,000 stores in 31 countries, has long been popular for its high-quality products at reasonable prices. That includes their 49-cent croissant, flown in from Europe and baked fresh daily in their stores. The chain, with discounts across fresh produce, pantry staples, and more, has two locations in Westchester; this marks their first in Rockland. 37 Route 303, lidl.com.
