Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman recently reflected on the New York Giants’ head coaching vacancy during the 2026 offseason, revealing what caught his attention amid widespread speculation linking him to the job.
Freeman, who had emerged as a prominent candidate on the Giants’ list, ultimately opted to remain at Notre Dame rather than pursue NFL opportunities.

In an appearance on the Up & Adams Show, Freeman discussed the possibility of coaching standout Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love, who is projected as a potential top-five pick in the 2026 NFL Draft and has been frequently connected to the Giants.
“That was the intriguing part,” Freeman said. “Knowing that you’ve got one of the best players in the country who is going to have the opportunity to be one of those top five picks. I’m as happy as I could be (at Notre Dame), but I am happy for him.”
The Giants reportedly held Freeman in high regard, viewing his leadership and program-building success as assets, though he was not formally interviewed before deciding to stay in South Bend. The team ultimately hired John Harbaugh as their head coach following a series of interviews.
Freeman’s comments highlight the unique draw of continuing a player-coach relationship at the professional level, even as he expressed full contentment with his current role.
