Major roadwork begins on I-86 in Chemung, state Route 14 in Horseheads

Motorists will face delays for the next several months on two major state highways that pass through Chemung County.

The state Department of Transportation announced work was scheduled to begin Monday, March 16 on a stretch of Interstate 86/state Route 17 through the Town of Chemung, and state Route 14 in the Village of Horseheads.

The work on I-86 will take place between Exit 58 (Lowman) and Exit 60 (Sayre/Waverly) and involves a bridge rehabilitation and deck overlay project involving four bridges crossing the Chemung River.

The work will require the highway to be reduced to a single lane in both directions for the duration of the project, which is expected to be complete by late November of this year.

Motorists should anticipate travel delays during this time and are advised to seek alternate routes if necessary, DOT said.

The Department of Transportation also anticipated starting work March 16 on state Route 14 between Chemung Street and Philo Road in the Village of Horseheads.

That stretch of the road will be reduced to a single lane in each direction to accommodate a bridge project. The work is expected to be complete by mid-December.

That project is also likely to cause travel delays, according to DOT officials, who advise motorists to seek alternate routes.
