CANANDAIGUA, NY — The long-awaited North Road makeover is about to start.
Canandaigua town officials said the $6.5 million reconstruction project is scheduled to begin the week of July 14, weather permitting.
North Road will be closed to all traffic except for residents within the construction zone, which spans from the intersection of County Road 28 to East Avenue (about 4,600 linear feet), along with the resurfacing of an additional 350 linear feet to the intersection of Sand Hill Road.
One-lane traffic will be maintained in work areas to allow access to residents.
“This project is a major step toward creating a safer and more accessible North Road,” said Highway Superintendent Jim Fletcher in a statement.
Here’s what we know now.
Why is this town of Canandaigua project happening?
The Town Board identified the need for the reconstruction of North Road to improve safety, road conditions, drainage and overall transportation efficiency.
The project includes the installation of a new eight-foot-wide sidewalk on the south side of the road.
How long will North Road construction last?
Work is expected to continue through November 2026, with an aggressive schedule to ensure timely completion, town officials said.
Work will typically take place from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. Weekend or night work may occur if necessary to maintain the schedule or minimize traffic disruptions.
What about traffic on North Road?
North Road will be reduced to one lane in active work zones, with signal lights controlling traffic.
Only local traffic will be allowed in the construction area.
Will Canandaigua residents in the area have access to homes?
Access will be maintained as much as possible. If temporary restrictions are necessary, affected property owners will be given advance notice.
No utility interruptions are anticipated during the course of the project.
Mail, deliveries and trash pickup will continue with minimal disruption. In some cases, trash and recycling may need to be placed in temporary pickup locations.
Current mailboxes will be removed and returned for safekeeping. A temporary mailbox will be installed, and the original mailbox will be reinstalled once construction is complete.
What you can do, or not do, to ease construction woes
Do not move any flags or survey markers because these are placed using GPS and are critical to construction accuracy. Avoid mowing over any markers or flags.
Construction is temporary, but the improvements will have lasting benefits.
“We appreciate the community’s patience as we work to improve a critical roadway,” Town Supervisor Jared Simpson stated.
