Marcarlo Mannello, George Johnson win Eastern States Wrestling titles

CLIFTON PARK – Two wrestling champions from the Lower Hudson Valley were crowned at the 2026 Eastern States Classic on Jan. 10 at Impact Athletic Center.

They are at completely different points in their scholastic careers.

At 103 pounds, Westlake Middle School student Marcarlo Mannello, who wrestles for the combined Briarcliff/Byram Hills/Valhalla/Westlake team won a 4-2 decision over Santino Pascarella of Half Hollow Hills East. Mannello is undefeated this season and was the top seed in the tournament.

“My goals right now are to keep working, of course, and go to states and win that,” said Mannello, who turned 13 in October. This is his second straight year placing at Eastern States, having placed eighth at 101 in 2025.

At 157 pounds, Iona Prep senior George Johnson of Mahopac won by a 12-3 major decision over Newtown (Connecticut)’s Antonio Arguello.

“This might sound crazy, but I don’t have any goals,” Johnson said. “I just like wrestling, I just want to keep going and do the best.”

In all the Lower Hudson Valley had 13 wrestlers place in the event, which many consider as prestigious or moreso than the state championship, for the field it draws. They are as follows.

Wrestlers from the Lower Hudson Valley who placed at Eastern States

103: Marcarlo Mannello, BBHVW, champion

118: Vincenzo Mannello, BBHVW, third (won his 100th match); Dorian Hidalgo, Iona Prep, eighth

138: Shane Degl, Iona Prep, eighth

144: Rowan Larsen, Yorktown, eighth

150: Nick Debellis, Horace Greeley, fourth

157: George Johnson, Iona Prep, champion; Chris Nocca, Horace Greeley, fourth

165: Luke Ryan, Fox Lane, fifth

175: Will Roden, Clarkstown North, sixth (won his 100th match)

190: Devin Bierfeldt, Nyack, seventh

215: Rocco Lore, Yorktown, third (won his 100th match)

285: Binak Bruncaj, Tappan Zee, eighth.

Marcarlo Mannello doing big things at a young age

When you see the success Mannello has, it’s easy to forget he’s not even in high school. As a 12-year-old, he placed at Eastern States, won a Section 1 title and placed fifth in the state.

“He’s so polished already as an eighth grader,” BBHVW coach Joe Grippi said, noting Mannello’s mentality and aggressiveness on the mat improved. “Last year, he was a little small for the weight class and this year, he’s just going after it. Every match, he’s trying to score as many points as he can.

Grippi said as young as his champion is, he’s already trying to share wrestling knowledge with teammates.

“He coaches half the kids on the team during their matches,” Grippi said. “I’m like, you have a future coach in you because I can already see he loves the sport. He doesn’t want to leave the gym all day and watch as much wrestling as he can.”

In the championship bout, Mannello had an escape and a takedown in the first period, only allowing a pair of points on escapes.

“Last year, no short offense from me. I couldn’t score from that position,” Mannello said. “Been working on it for the past year. Finals match, tied 1-1. When it mattered, I scored a takedown.”

Mannello had three pins and two technical falls in the two-day event before picking up the decision and standing atop the podium. He said his neutral game improved over the last year.

“Last year, I would try to keep it close, just stay there for the win. This year, I realized, it’s not going to work on these kids. So I decided, let’s just go after him. Pay it off.”

George Johnson works for dominant finish at Eastern States

George Johnson said he didn’t want to just win matches this year at Eastern States, he wanted to win them convincingly. He did that.

His championship was a major decision where he had three takedowns, an escape and a reversal. His semifinal win over former Section 1 champion Chris Nocca of Horace Greeley was a technical fall. His quarterfinal win was a technical fall. His first two matches on Friday were a pin and a technical fall.

“Have I gotten a lot better? Definitely,” Johnson said. “Have I changed my mindset? Three-hundred percent. Last year, I wanted to cruise through matches, didn’t do so bad – third place. This year, I didn’t just want to win. I wanted to dominate, keep scoring.”

Iona Prep coach Tom Straehle thought Johnson’s performance at Eastern States was “fantastic.”

“He was focused, went through every opponent and dominated,” Straehle said. “I think he’s looking for a state title and this was his warmup.”

Straehle also noted that Johnson is looking ahead to what he’s going to do after high school wrestling.

“He’s focused on performing well in high school, so he has more opportunities going forward,” Straehle said.

A pair of third-place finishers win their 100th bout

BBHVW’s Vincenzo Mannello, Marcarlo’s older brother, won his 100th match in his win in the third-place match at 118 pounds, a 4:59 pin over Manhasset’s Will Russell.

“It definitely is a cool accomplishment, but there’s definitely more to come,” said Mannello, who’s in ninth grade and is his third year on varsity.

Yorktown’s Rocco Lore, who placed third at 215, won his 100th match in a consolation semifinal, defeating Geneva’s Gianni Velazquez, 19-4.

“Getting third’s nice, but the match I lost (a quarterfinal pinfall loss to Minisink Valley’s Zach Filip in 3:44), it’s a learning experience,” said Lore, who said he wanted to study video of that bout. “I just want to look at the itty-bitty details I need to fix. I need to wrestle that kid harder. And I get to go see him at the Minisink Duals.”

He did take a moment to enjoy No. 100.

“It’s really a great feeling because I’ve worked so hard for this,” Lore said. “Getting it today, at this big of a tournament, of this magnitude, it means the world to me. I’m really excited about it. So hitting it with my family, my teammates, my friends around me, my coaches who pushed me so hard in the room, it means everything to me.”

Clarkstown North’s Will Roden, who placed sixth at 175 pounds, also won his 100th varsity match at Eastern States, a win in the consolation round, a 10-3 decision over Monsignor Farrell’s John Bonura.

Greeley wrestlers place fourth, ready for more

A pair of Greeley grapplers, Chris Nocca at 157 and Nick Debellis at 150 placed fourth in the event. Nocca placed for a second straight year, after an eight-place finish at 152 in 2025.

“I feel really good about how I did,” Debellis said. “I mean, a loss always sucks, but I didn’t even make it to the blood rounds at sections last year, so it’s good.”

Nocca said placing isn’t new for him and he needs to do more work.

“Not my best, but there’s a lot of work to be done before postseason,” Nocca said. “We’ve got practice (Sunday) and we’ll get back to work.
