The New York Jets entered the offseason needing to totally retool their defensive line. They’ve already done that throughout the early portion of free agency. T
he Jets verbally agreed to terms with pass rushers Kingsley Enagbare and Joseph Ossai.
The team recorded the second-fewest sacks in the NFL (26) last season. Quinnen Williams was traded to the Dallas Cowboys at the midseason deadline.
General manager Darren Mougey has already dealt Jermaine Johnson II to the Tennessee Titans this offseason for nose tackle T’Vondre Sweat. Acquiring Ossai and Enagbare helps offset Johnson’s loss.
On tape, Ossai is a defender with an elite motor and effort level. That’s been a theme throughout the early portion of the Jets’ free agency plan. Ossai is a relentless pursuer who plays with infectious energy.
Pro Football Focus credited Ossai with recording 43 pressures and five sacks for the Cincinnati Bengals last season. He’s a versatile high-floor defender who should allow Glenn and defensive coordinator Brian Duker to get creative with his usage. Ossai also projects as an edge-setter in the run game who is strong and physical at the point of attack.
Ossai rushes the passer with explosive get-off and straightline speed. The Jets will appreciate his effort and athleticism opposite pass rusher Will McDonald IV on early downs. Mougey has a plan to improve the Jets’ pass-rushing unit this offseason, and Ossai will play a large role in its reimagining.
