In a race that was too close to call on Election Night, unofficial results in the race for Village of Johnson City mayor showed Democratic challenger Christina Charuk ahead of incumbent Republican Martin Meaney on Nov. 10.
According to Broome County Board of Elections Republican Deputy Commissioner Joseph Bertoni, updated Board of Elections results reflect 1,268 votes for Charuk and 1,255 for Meaney.
Unofficial results from election night showed Meaney had secured a nine-vote lead, with 1,244 votes to Charuk’s 1,235. At the time, the board still had to review and process mail-in ballots that were received at poll sites and any affidavit ballots cast.
What happens next in Johnson City mayor race
The board expects to certify the latest results by the end of the week. With the candidates separated by only 13 votes, a manual recount will follow.
In New York, a recount is required if the margin of victory in a race is less than 20 votes or 0.5%.
