Charlie Wylie, Sara Pauls claim girls wrestling state titles

Charlie Wylie of Port Jervis and Sara Pauls from Minisink Valley captured championships at the New York State Public High School Athletic Association girls wrestling championships in Albany on Thursday, February 26. Wylie was a repeat winner at 107 pounds.

The senior Wylie (30-1) made quick work of four foes, requiring only 1:47 of total mat time – she had three wins by technical fall and a semifinal pin. In the finals, Wylie tech falled Katie Porcelli of Rocky Point in 1:24.

The junior Pauls (42-1) posted three pins at 126 and a tech fall win in the quarterfinals. In the final, she pinned No. 4 seed Reese Adams of Calhoun in 5:44.

Junior Victoria Alvarado of Warwick (the state champ at 152 in 2025) reached the finals as top seed at 145, but was pinned by Delaney Dixon of Windsor in 2:55.

Monroe-Woodbury freshman Gail Sullivan posted three tech fall wins at 120 but was decisioned by Gabrielle Severin of Bethpage 6-4 in the finals.

A duo of Section 9 wrestlers won their third-place matches: Valley Central’s Arica Pearson-Leary at 152 and Jaida Macaluso of Minisink Valley at 185. Falling in the third-place matches were Olivia Schmidt of Valley Central (107) and Jada Lee of Monroe-Woodbury at 138.

In fifth-place matches, Rilee Kinsley won at 145, but losses were suffered by Natalia Quinteros Tejada of Roosevelt (100); Keira Filip of Minisink (114); Rebecca Brennan of New Paltz (132); and, Madeira Monchery of Middletown (235).

Section 9 (Orange, Ulster, Sullivan, part of Dutchess County) sent 22 girls to the event. Arlington and Roy C. Ketcham from Section 1 (Dutchess, Westchester, Rockland, Putnam) sent five qualifiers.

The boys tournament will follow on Friday and Saturday, February-27-28, also at MVP Arena.

The Minisink girls placed third (last year the Warriors were sixth), Valley Central was fourth, Monroe-Woodbury 13th and Port Jervis 18th.
