For the first time since 2012, the New York Giants will not open their annual summer camp at their home facility in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
Due to renovation work at the Quest Diagnostics Training Center and the overrun of the World Cup, which is being hosted at the adjacent MetLife Stadium, the area won’t be ready for the Giants to set up camp until mid-August.
So, the Giants decided to bug out and head to The Greenbrier Sports Performance Center in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, for the first week of camp. They will hold six practices free and open to the public. The first open practice will be held on Thursday, July 30. There will be workouts on July 31, August 1, 5, and 6, with the final workout on Friday, August 7.
All practices are scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m., but times are subject to change and/or be moved indoors and closed to the public in the event of inclement weather.
So, what does this mean for the masses of Giant fans who look forward to attending camp every year? We put together some quick tips for you.
Transportation
The Greenbrier is 468 miles from MetLife Stadium, which is approximately a seven-hour drive. The route is fairly direct, mainly using two highways, I-78 W and I-81 S. There is also an alternate route using I-95 S.
There are public transportation options available. Check here for train, bus, and flight information.
Where to stay
Attending Giants camp here is more than a one-day trip. Many will make a mini-vacation out of it. There are plenty of lodging options in the Greenbrier Valley of all varieties and prices, and there’s a lot of charm to the area. There are also quite a few options for RV travellers nearby.
About camp
Admission is free with no tickets required to attend. A shuttle service will be provided from an off-site location as public parking will not be available without the purchase of a parking pass. Parking passes will be available for purchase on the training camp website beginning July 9 at 10:00 a.m.
