Funeral arrangements have been announced for Alina Toone, 17, and her brother Jeremiah Toone, 15, who died after a house fire in Cortlandt Manor on May 27.
The siblings were inside their family’s home on Sherwood Road with their mother and older brother when the fire broke out at about 2:27 a.m.
According to the Mohegan Lake Fire Department, firefighters used ladders to reach second-floor windows and rescue the teens from the burning home.
Both siblings were in cardiac arrest when they were removed from the house. First responders performed CPR before they were transported to Westchester Medical Center, where they later died from their injuries.
Their mother and older brother were also hospitalized but survived and have since been released.
Services scheduled in Shrub Oak and White Plains
Visitation for Alina and Jeremiah Toone will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 12, at Yorktown Funeral Home in Shrub Oak.
A funeral service is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Saturday, June 13, at Reach Church in White Plains. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Memorial Park in Putnam Valley.
Fire ruled accidental
The Westchester County Cause and Origin Team determined the fire was accidental and electrical in nature.
Investigators said the blaze likely originated from a power strip and extension cord in the rear dining room of the home.
Community continues to support family
Westchester County District Attorney Susan Cacace identified Alina and Jeremiah as the children of Westchester County Corrections Officer Gregory Toone and offered condolences on behalf of the law enforcement community.
“This unbelievable tragedy is every parent’s worst nightmare,” Cacace said in a statement following the fire. “Mr. Toone and his family remain in our thoughts during this extremely difficult time.”
A GoFundMe created to support the Toone family has raised more than $228,000 following the fire, which displaced the family from their home.
