Between heat, humidity and running deer, the Boilermaker 15k Road Race on Sunday, July 13 was definitely not a walk in the park, some of the runners said while relaxing at the Saranac Post-Race Party in West Utica said.

Women’s 15K winner
Veronica Loleo claims the women’s 15K with at time of 49.37.
Men’s 15K winner repeats
John Korir repeats as the men’s 15K winner with a time of approx. 42.47. This is a little slower than his winning time last year of 42.11.
To compare, last year’s winning time was 49:18, in a photo finish.
Post race care
Seneca Falls Health Center has chiropractic students from its college giving free treatment to racers.
5K winners
Brandon Moran from Somerville, Mass and Juliet Hull, relocated from New Hartford to North Carolina, take first place in the men’s and women’s 5K respectively.

All the way from Mexico, this is Alfonso Zaragoza’s eighth Boilermaker. but he’s been competing in races like this for the last 28 years.
He calls it his passion and the passion of the crowd pushes him forward.

A teacher and a firefighter, Roger Williams said this is his sixth Boilermaker.
He originally participated because his friends said it was an amazing race where everybody was supporting you. Ever since then, he said he’s been hooked.
And he plans on participating as many times as he can in the future.
Last race?
John Nagy of Oriskany Falls started running in the Boilermaker in 2018. He works as a truck driver and his schedule has made it hard to train, so he’s worried this might be his last one.
He hopes he’ll be able to participate next year, as the energy and camaraderie of the race is wonderful.
From runner to volunteer
Kathy Cleary reflected on her experience with the Boilermaker, a few hours prior to the beginning of the race.
Kathy’s first Boilermaker was 25 years ago. She’s run the 15K five times and the 5K “…I can’t tell you how many times.”
This year, she’s volunteering. She said the Boilermaker has been a big part of her life living in Mohawk Valley.
The preliminary events are over. Bring on the main event.
Boilermaker weekend in Utica has already seen a health and wellness expo, a kids’ run and the Boilermaker Walk, but today brings the featured races: The Boilermaker 5K, the Boilermaker Wheelchair 15K and the flagship Boilermaker 15K race.
And the fun doesn’t stop with the races. Runners can bask in the glory of their accomplishment at the Saranac Post Race Party at F.X. Matt Brewing Co.

Boilermaker race times
The Boilermaker 15K Road Race presented by Excellus BlueCross BlueShield starts promptly at 8 a.m. on Sunday, July13.
The starting line is on Earle C. Reed Way near the intersection of Dwyer Avenue. The Wheelchair Race begins at7:45 a.m. and the 5K Race presented by Utica National begins at 7:15 a.m. on Burrstone Road near Donovan Stadium.
The Boilermaker course
A 9.3-mile tour of Utica, the Boilermaker takes participants from the starting line, along the Memorial Parkway, up through Valley View Country Club and Golf Course, back onto the Memorial Parkway, along upper Genesee Street, turning onto Shepherd Place, Sunset Avenue, and then onto Burrstone Road passing the Utica College Campus. The course then comes down Champlin Avenue, Whitesboro, and Court streets, and concludes at the F.X. Matt’s Brewery.
The 5K course starts on Burrstone Road near York Street (at the 10K point of the 15K.) The 5K courseis the last third of the Boilermaker 15K.
Weather forecast for the Boilermaker
Meteorologist Ema Sera said on July 13, the day of the Boilermaker Road Race in Utica, a warm front will move through the area.
“There’s a possibility of showers and thunderstorms across our entire region,” Sera said.
The chance for rain looks to be around 30% in the early morning, with that chance increasing to 45% by the afternoon.
Temperatures are expected to be around the mid-70s early in the morning, around 8 a.m. By late morning, temperatures begin to increase slowly until the late afternoon, reaching a high of around 85 degrees.
