Flag Football Player of the Week, presented by White Plains Hospital

Who will be the lohud Flag Football Player of the Week, presented by White Plains Hospital? It’s time to look at the standouts from May 18-23, the last week of Section 1 postseason play and the Section championships.

Mamaroneck (Class A), Yorktown (Class B) and Westlake/Briarcliff (Class C) were crowned Section 1 champions on May 23, qualifying for the state tournament. Scarsdale in Class A also qualified for the Class A state tournament as Section 1 Class A has an at-large bid this season.

Check out the nominees in lohud Flag Football Player of the Week, presented by White Plains Hospital, and cast your vote. The athletes’ credentials are listed above the fan poll, which will be open until 3 p.m. Wednesday, May 27. The winner will be announced on lohud sports social media on Wednesday.

This week’s nominees were from coaches and also from staff based on postseason performance.

Let’s meet the candidates.

Amelia Amenedo, Byram Hills

The freshman had four touchdowns in Byram Hills’ 33-20 win over Dobbs Ferry in a Section 1 Class C semifinal, which concluded May 21. Byram Hills was runner-up to Westlake/Briarcliff in Class C.

Leah Brown, Scarsdale

The senior had nine sacks in Scarsdale’s 13-6 win over Yonkers in a Section 1 Class A semifinal on May 20. Scarsdale was runner-up in Section 1 Class A and the defending state champion received an at-large bid to the Class A state tournament.

Juliana DiMarino, Westlake/Briarcliff

The sophomore figured into six touchdowns – five on the ground and one in the air – as Westlake/Briarcliff defeated Byram Hills in the Section 1 Class C championship game, 55-6.

Eve Girardi, Tappan Zee

The senior had four touchdown passes and a touchdown run in Tappan Zee’s 34-19 win over Brewster in a Section 1 Class B semifinal. Tappan Zee was runner-up in Class B.

Sarah Sherman, Mamaroneck

The senior had 10 flag pulls, three sacks and two interceptions in Mamaroneck’s 13-7 win over Scarsdale for the Section 1 Class A championship. In the semifinal win over Arlington and the final, Sherman had 7 seven receptions for 100 yards. Against Arlington in the semifinal, Sherman had five flag pulls and three sacks.

Sydney Soliz, Yorktown

The senior had five sacks and seven flag pulls in Yorktown’s 18-14 win over Tappan Zee for the Section 1 Class B championship.
