Since New York state added Class AAA for boys soccer two seasons ago, Fairport has proven a notch above its competition. The two-time defending Section V champions haven’t dropped from their perch just yet.
The Red Raiders open as New York state’s No. 1 team in Class AAA, in the first state rankings of the season published by the New York State Sportswriters Association.
Fairport is perfect through seven matches this fall, arguably its most impressive win coming on Sept. 8 in a shutout over defending Class AA section champion Spencerport (in a game that was postponed due to inclement weather). That start extends the Red Raiders’ unbeaten streak to 26 games, which is approaching some historic stretches in state history.
The defense, led by keeper Evan Furciniti, has allowed only two goals.
The road ahead presents some challenges. There are still two matches left against Penfield, then one apiece against Churchville-Chili (a favorite in Class AA) and Brighton (last year’s AA runner-up). But Fairport, again, remains one of Monroe County’s best teams.
