Don't expect the Jets to make a play for Micah Parsons

Dallas Cowboys superstar EDGE Micah Parsons formally requested a trade last week. Parsons has been dissatisfied with the lack of discussions surrounding a contract extension in Dallas. The other 31 teams should possess legitimate interest in acquiring the elite defender, but don’t expect the New York Jets to realistically pursue him.

The Jets are rebuilding. New general manager Darren Mougey and head coach Aaron Glenn want to build the roster through the draft. Acquiring Parsons would be expensive, as in three first-round picks expensive. Parsons is also the rare talent it’d be worth parting with that much capital before also signing him to a record-breaking extension.

Aaron Rodgers left the Jets shell-shocked from chasing big-name talents via trade, though Parsons is in a different era of his career when the aging Rodgers was. Still, Mougey and Glenn have decided to take a patient approach. Trading the farm for Parsons would represent a stark detour from the road they’re currently traveling on.

The Jets also aren’t in win-now mode. There’s no shortcut to contention. Parsons has multiple elite years ahead of him, but the Jets aren’t necessarily looking to accelerate their process. They believe in the foundational building blocks they’ve laid this offseason.

Shifting your strategy to acquire a talent like Parsons would be worthwhile, but the Cowboys are unlikely to trade him anyway. Parsons’ contract should sort itself out in Dallas. The Jets should consider breaking the mold, but don’t ultimately expect any movement here.
