CANANDAIGUA, NY — A Canandaigua police officer fatally shot a dog that was actively attacking its owner on Saltonstall Street Friday evening, July 18.
Officers responded to a 911 call around 5:10 p.m. reporting a dog attack. When they arrived, they found a pit bull attacking a woman on a front lawn. As the first officer ran to assist, the dog released the woman and charged at the officer, who fired three shots, killing the dog.
The 29-year-old victim, identified as the dog’s owner and a Canandaigua resident, sustained severe injuries and disfigurement to her right arm and hand, along with bite wounds to her leg, shoulder, and face. She was transported to Strong Memorial Hospital by Canandaigua EMS.
Prior to police arrival, a bystander who tried to help the woman was also bitten. They sustained minor injuries but declined treatment.
Investigators say the attack occurred while the woman was walking the dog on a leash. The Ontario County Humane Society responded to take custody of the deceased animal.
Police are continuing to investigate the dog’s background and history.
