Repair work was scheduled to begin Wednesday, June 24, on the long-closed Gillett Road bridge in Ogden
Bridge closed due to hazardous conditions
The bridge, owned by railroad company CSX and connecting the town of Ogden with the village of Spencerport, was shut down by the New York State Department of Transportation more than 18 months ago due to hazardous conditions.
County issues ultimatum
On June 5, Monroe County attorneys sent a formal letter to CSX, demanding that the company either repair or replace the bridge—or face legal action.
Repairs expected to take 6–8 weeks
On Tuesday, County Executive Adam Bello announced that CSX had agreed to make the necessary repairs. The work will be carried out by Winn Construction Corporation and is expected to take six to eight weeks to complete.
Officials say residents have waited long enough
“Over the last 18 months, I’ve heard from countless residents about the negative impacts the Gillett Road bridge closure is having on their daily lives,” Bello said in a statement. “After many good-faith attempts to get CSX to resolve the issues with the bridge, my administration recently took the necessary step of submitting a formal demand to compel the railroad company to immediately repair or replace the bridge. This situation simply could not continue any longer.”
Ogden Town Supervisor Mike Zale echoed that sentiment, saying: “CSX’s agreement to finally address the Gillett Road Bridge is a major win for our residents and for public safety.”
